A Free Woman review

Posted : 1 year, 9 months ago on 8 October 2012 10:06 (A review of A Free Woman)

this is a depressing film.
It tells the story of Elisabeth, who gets divorced at 30 and has to start over. She wants to emancipate, but society is just not ready for a self-determined woman, who unfortunately gave up her job for marriage, her child and a domestic life.
She finds herself caught between living independently and getting custody of her son, which are two things incompatible in the patriarchal society of Germany in the early 70s.
In the end Elisabeth has to submit to the repressive system in order to have her son live with her.
Makes you think about what has changed since then, and unfortunately how much more there is still to be done. Recommended!!

See the Sea review

Posted : 1 year, 9 months ago on 1 October 2012 09:54 (A review of See the Sea)

Ozon's longest short is very similar to his other ones, a built up of tension, very little dialogue and a quite shocking but sort-of expected ending.
A young woman on vacation on a peaceful island with her baby daughter is sought out by Tatiana, a traveler, who piches her tent in the garden. Their interaction is marked by tension and thigs begin to unfold...
I recommend this film, I guess it could also be counted among the so-called French New Extremity, though I am no expert and this is certainly arguable!!

The Free Will review

Posted : 1 year, 9 months ago on 27 September 2012 12:27 (A review of The Free Will)

This truly is a terrific film. It takes you to the mind of the protagonist and shows, never speaks, the undescibably despair and darkness of the characters.
The best and most realistic film on the issue I have yet seen.

Le Choc (The Shock) review

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 20 September 2012 08:04 (A review of Le Choc (The Shock))

Ok crime film, with a bit of romance trown into it.
The plot is mostly unsurprising, but nevertheless decent enough.
Martin aka Christian is a profi killer, who wants to quit the buisness, but as expected his former boss, or contact person tries to off him. When he goes to have a look at a turkey farm he bought to launder his moeny he meets Claire and they hit it off. When a killer squad comes for him, things get ugly and he and his new found love have to flee....and so on. Not a great film, but ok if you want some light entertainment :)

Making Plans for Lena review

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 17 September 2012 03:13 (A review of Making Plans for Lena)

Haven't seen much bei Honoré (yet), but this one can be passed imo. The main character is just so self-indulgent and unbearably tiring. After about 5 mnutes you get that she is stressed and can't really handle being a single mother, and it shouldn't be white-washed how hard it can be. But to me there was no real point to the story, and I was just so annoyed by Lena that it was all I could focus on. Give it a try, if you don't like the first 15 minutes, it doesn't get much better, nor different. Pass.

Hotel Splendide review

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 17 September 2012 03:02 (A review of Hotel Splendide)

Stumbled across this delightful little film recently and decided to give it a go (mainly because of Toni Collette to be honest) and it was worth it.
Plotwise, the story is set on a remote island, where there is nothing but the once-probably-splendide hotel, now run-down and frequented by guests who get treatments for all sorts of things and are put on a strict saafood diet, invented by the now dead head of the family.
The three children are now running the place. Kath, formerly sous-chef, comes back to the island on grounds of a note she received and mixes the place up and things start to change.
I liked the atmosphere in the film, the whole dirty and grotesque setting and some almost camp characters. Even though the characters are rather one-dimensional, it's an entertaining film. I like!

Courage fuyons review

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 28 August 2012 04:10 (A review of Courage fuyons)

This film caught me by surprise, I wasn't expecting anything great, but I must say it's surprisingly funny and entertaining! Telling the story of a coward per se Martin Belhomme (who's got cowardness in his genes), the film follows the protagonist's chance encounter with a singer, whom he falls in love and stays with, wife and children at home, knowing of mothing. He has to return though (out of cowardice) and the real comedy begins....if you get the chance, give it a watch, it's worth it.

Special Treatment review

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 8 April 2012 05:49 (A review of Special Treatment)

How close are the jobs of a psychiatrist and a prostitute? Both jobs are paralleled in "Sans queue ni tête". Turns out what the psychiatrist needs is not a prostitute but what the prostitute needs is a therapist.

My Little Princess review

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 8 April 2012 05:27 (A review of My Little Princess)

Mother, aspiring photographer, uses her teenage daughter as a model for her rather shocking and depraved photos. At first it's all good fun, until her daughter turns into a Lolita, the role almost being forced on her by her mother. She doesn't want to be part of the team anymore and things get complicated. Will she be able to free herself from that all-consuming egocentric mother? Eva Ionesco, the director, makes her own childhood into a film. Very brave and superly acted!

Angel review

Posted : 2 years, 3 months ago on 8 April 2012 05:08 (A review of Angel)

Eccentric woman writer in Edwardian times as an immense success with her books. She moves to "paradise" with the love of her life. But it all takes a tragic end. Nice kitsch. It's all quite "camp", but not in the good way imo. Just...not the right amount.
